Indigo Girls Kingston: Update

The Kingston chapter of Indigo Girls has kept busy with several projects in the recent months. We are very happy with the progress we have made with our fundraising initiatives, and thankful for all the community support we have received!

From November to December, we ran a very successful bra drive in support of victims of sex trafficking. Over 400 bras were collected, and will be shipped to Free The Girls, an organization that works to help survivors of sex-trafficking live healthy, and productive lives. Bras—a highly sought-after commodity in many of the survivors’ home countries—are a product the women can sell to provide themselves and their families with a safe, and stable source of income. Over the past couple of months, Indigo Girls has also been looking to raise funds to be able to cover the shipping costs of the collected bras.

One of the most notable fundraising events we have organized in the past month was our black tie, “Skyfall In Love” night at Stages Nightclub. The Valentine’s Day-themed event was held on February 10th, and the turnout allowed us to reach our fundraising goal! All the proceeds will be going towards funding after-school programs including our Girl’s Clubs and workshops in support of educating young girls about self-empowerment.

This month, starting on February 1st we have started running workshops in partner with Girls Inc., with the first workshop “Love Yourself,” already having been well received by the girls in attendance. Our after-school Girl’s Club at James R. Henderson Public School has also started-up this month, and will continue to run-through to the end of the school year.

We are also tremendously excited to introduce our new conference “Empower Yourself,” which will run later in the fall of this year. The conference will include several workshops run by members of the Queen’s group I Am That Girl, and Indigo Girls, as well as keynote speakers. The conference will be open to any female ages 14-18 interested in the community and will be held on campus at Queen’s University, stay tuned, and visit our blog and social media platforms for more details!
